Did the Summer Hailstorm Damage Your Roof? Here’s What to Know About Filing an Insurance Claim

After a recent hailstorm this summer a number of our clients and neighbors in the North Metro Atlanta market are replacing their roof and, fortunately, a number of insurance providers are covering the cost.

Because we’ve had several neighbors and clients ask about this recently, we wanted to share a quick guide on what to do if you suspect hail damage to your roof.

The Hailstorm That Hit Roswell, Alpharetta, and Johns Creek

This past June, parts of Roswell, Alpharetta, and Johns Creek were hit with hail as large as 1.5 inches in diameter—about the size of a ping-pong ball, according to StormerSite.com.

That size hail can cause serious damage to asphalt shingles, the most common roofing material in our area. When left unaddressed, that damage may lead to leaks and even structural issues. Hail of this size is also often grounds for filing a homeowners insurance claim.

Thinking of Filing a Roof Claim? Here Are the Steps:

1. Assess and Document the Damage

The first step is to have a professional roofing company inspect your roof for signs of hail damage—such as missing or bruised shingles, granule loss, or leaks. Be sure to get photos and/or video documentation of any damage.

Our trusted roofing partner for years has been Mark Johnson of Roofing and Exterior Solutions. They have already gotten a number of claims approved in our market and they’ve been in business for 25+ years.

2. Contact Your Insurance Company

If the inspection confirms damage, review your policy coverage for roof-related claims and reach out to your insurance provider. Be ready to share:

  • The estimated date of the storm
  • Description and extent of the damage
  • Photos and inspection reports from your roofer

We also recommend keeping notes of your conversations and documenting all communication with your insurer.

3. Get a Roofing Estimate

Whether your claim is approved or not, it’s important to get a detailed estimate from a licensed, reputable roofing contractor.

⚠️ Thinking of selling soon? Homes with damaged or aging roofs (typically 15+ years old) may need repairs or replacement before closing. Some insurers are refusing to write new policies unless the roof is updated.

4. Meet with the Insurance Adjuster

Your insurance company will send an adjuster to inspect the damage and determine the payout.

It’s a smart move to have your roofer present during the inspection. They can help point out damage that may otherwise go unnoticed and ensure the adjuster has a full picture. If the settlement offer seems low, you can negotiate or consider hiring a public adjuster.

5. Finalize the Claim and Repairs

Once the claim is approved, review the settlement carefully. Make sure it covers all related repairs, including gutters if they were affected.

After the funds are released, move forward with your roofing contractor to schedule the work.

💡 Will a roof claim affect your insurance premium?
Typically, a single claim for storm damage won’t raise your rates, but repeated large claims may lead to non-renewal. It’s always best to discuss potential impacts with your agent before filing.
